UNIT TWO EVALUATION
For unit two I choose the theme human condition: companionship because I thought it would be interesting to do. Though unit two I have looked at several artists but I started by looking at Carla Richmond Coffing and Hanne Steen's "Love shirts" the photographer and writer worked together to create this ongoing project I think the thing that drew me to it was the idea of capturing how a piece of clothing can have a visual and emotional context that the audience can see so clearly. Another thing I found interesting about the "love shirts" project was how the piece of clothing can become how the partners represent their past relationship. After that I created a set of images of my grandparents because I thought it would link well with the theme having pictures of an old couple as they are the ones in our society who have had companionship for the longest. I decided I was unsure about the images and decided to move on and look at Dorothea Lange. I liked the idea of looking at companionship in everyday life how we integrate into society if society in one body of people who look out for each other or if there are outcasts who society does not care about. I looked at two of Langes photos: The white angel Breadline, and Migrant mother. Then I took a set of Photos inspired by society's behaviour in public. I really liked the outcome so I looked at another artist Beat Streuli. Streuli takes photos of individual people in public without them knowing using a macro lens. So I thought maybe I could something similar but instead of capturing one person I decided to try and capture couples and groups. From these photos I made my first final outcome a tryptic of the three photos I thought worked best. Then I looked at display I looked at two artists Larry Sulton and Julian Germain. Both of whom make books for the pieces of work I was looking at. I really liked Larry Sultons pictures from home as they reflect his parents companionship and life. And I also liked Germain's work as it had vivid colours but also ways of drawing the audiences eye into Snelling's life. I decided that I would like to make a book so I made a new set of photos responding to Sulton and Germains work.
Throughout unit two I have experimented with format and how this affects my perception of companions. For example I started of by taking quiet naturalistic set of photos of my grandparents. Which in my opinion was kind of like the most obvious exploration for companionship as they were a couple who had been married for just over fifty years. And then I looked at the artists Doretha Lange and Beat Streuli. Which made me think about companionship in public, so I experimented with the idea and made a set of photos and a tryptic prep piece. But I didn't like that idea too much so I decided to go back towards my original idea and looked at two more artists Larry Sulton and Julian Germain. And took another set of photos of which I combined with my first set. I then experimented with photoshop actions to get a more vintage cold atmosphere to the photos.
For unit two I documented my ideas on my weebly page called unit two. There it shows which artists I have looked at and the different sets of photos I have created. I have chosen to make a book as my response to unit two. The some of the book is displayed below.
