Originally from Britain John Coplans was a photographer, writer and painter. In 1946 he studied art, and 11 years later he had his first tachiste-influenced abstract exhibition which was inspired by the exhibition the new american painting. Then in 1960 he moved to America and taught at the university of California at Berkeley. and in 1962 he co-founded the west coast art scene. And in 1971 he settled in New york and became the editor of Artforum. And in 1978 the influence of his friend photographer Lee Friedlander, and began to take photographs again.
Six years later and he was taking photographs of his own body, Which established his international reputation. The pictures are humorous explorations of his body. In the pictures you can really see the detail and interest in the subject. ie. hands, feet, knees ect. And things like if the subject is old or young, its basically a portrait. |
Artist Response (1st set of images)
The idea behind this artist copy is to explore how close up pictures of my hands can act like a portrait without taking a photo of my face. like Coplans I used good lighting and monochrome settings.
Rayograms (2nd set of images)
I made these photograms to extend my idea of making a portrait without the viewer clearly seeing my face. By using the rings and bracelets that i wear every day then extended this idea by using my hands and the profile of my face. from this set of images I have learnt that to understand close up photography we must understand the shape of the object/subject of the thing we are photographing.
