Cyanotypes
Anna Atkins (16th march 1799-9th june 1871) was an English botanist(a person who studies the science of plant life and a branch of biology.) and a photographer. She is often considered the first person to publish a photograph. Basically she was a botanist which meant she needed to document lots plants so using this cleaver time saving technique she could document more plants in a shorter amount of time.

My Cyanotypes
Evaluation.
1) This was my first cyanotype it didn't go that well because there isn't much of a contrast between the two colours like in the second one. This was mainly because I didn't rinse off the chemicals that well,so there are lots of cloudy patches of dark blueish grey.
|
2) My second cyanotype was more experimental than the first. I swapped two object half way through the development so a ghostly shadow would appear. I would improve this piece by having less large objects,so I could add more.

Rayograms/photograms
History of photograms
A photogram is a photographic image made without using a camera. The process of making photograms was actually discovered by William Henry Fox Tallbot. An inventor from Dorset in the 19th century. Annoyed at his drawing skills he invented a devise to automatically sketch for him which was inspired by the camera obscurer. Camera obscures projects images of its surrounding. And with his interest in light and chemistry he started experimenting with paper sensitised in salt and silver nitrate placed a leaf on top and left it in the sun. this resulted in a white silhouette of the object placed on top of the sensitised paper.
Man Ray
Man Ray was an american visual artist who was born in 1890 and died in 1976. He was a big contributor to art movements such as surrealism and Dada. In July 1921 he moved to paris in the Montparmasse quarter which was a very popular place for artists to live. He crossed paths with famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali.

My photograms and rayograms
This was my first attempt at photograms and it didn't work that well mainly because it was blurry and was empty. For my next one I am going to use the same objects but in a different composition. Also I used an exposure of fifteen seconds I think this may have been a bit too long.
|
This was my second attempt at photograms and it worked much better because there are much more objects than the first one I did. In this one I used an exposure of 10 seconds I think this may have been about right because there were so many objects and it gives a ghostly shadow for objects that were only on the light sensitive paper for five seconds.
